Alcohol and Drug Addiction Support Groups for Young People and Parents in the Denver, CO Area

One of the slogans of our drug addiction support groups: "Enjoy sobriety, it's the real thing."

Located in Denver, Colorado, The Cornerstone Program is a drug and alcohol rehab program that provides twelve step support group meetings as part of our intensive outpatient program and aftercare program for young people. These support groups offer participants a safe and nonjudgmental place to interact with others who are dealing with similar struggles, while also linking fun and sobriety and providing a place for participants to practice the skills they have learned in the treatment process.

Why Support Groups are Crucial in Drug & Alcohol Rehab

While professional counseling or formal therapy can be extremely helpful in early recovery from all types of substance use disorders, peer support is often the key to a recovery that lasts for many years. This is part of the reason for the widespread success of 12-step groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Al Anon family groups. We firmly believe that peer support groups play a vital role in both treatment and aftercare programs. Currently, we are the only drug and alcohol rehab treatment center in the Denver area that offers an age-specialized type of support group for teens and family members. Our support groups bring group members who are further along in the recovery process together with newer members to facilitate relationships based on sobriety and recovery. This allows new members to benefit from the knowledge and coping skills taught by experienced members and strengthens everyone’s commitment to their recovery.

Recovery Support Groups for Teens & Young Adults

Our alcohol and drug support group in a live concert in Denver, Colorado.

Our Denver location offers two support group meetings per week for teens and young adults. For meeting times, please call our drug and alcohol rehab center at (303) 690-0082.

On the Fridays and Saturdays, we host two social events that are designed to allow young people the opportunity to connect with others their age, have fun, and discover a better way of life in sobriety. These social events, called “functions”, change week-to-week. They can include everything from comedy nights, dances, or occasional live concerts (with young people from the support groups who have formed a band) to something as silly as flyswatter hockey (ask us in your initial appointment, and we’ll explain!). During the summer, we do a weekend group campout, and in the winter we do a ski trip!

During the holiday season, we host special sober events for drug and alcohol rehab and support group members. These events include a gratitude meeting held the night before Thanksgiving that brings group members, parents, and siblings together in a supportive environment. On New Year’s Eve, we hold a lock-in for members and their families that allows everyone to ring in the new year in a festive and sober manner. This includes a dance, life stories, meetings, and a midnight balloon drop.

Family Support Groups

The greatest lie that most drug users tell themselves is, “I’m only hurting myself.” If you’ve got a young person in your family who is using drugs, you know that their drug use doesn’t just affect them. It affects their family and friends as well. Over time, this can lead to numerous problems in the family, including strained relationships, a feeling of hopelessness, and even physical health problems. Participating in our parent support group helps parents navigate all of the emotions and situations they are having to deal with on a day-to-day basis. Learning from the collective experience of parents who are further along in the process proves to be an invaluable asset, especially in dealing with young people.

The 12 Steps for Young People

The Cornerstone Program’s treatment programs and support groups include a heavy emphasis on the 12 steps. This version of the 12 steps used by drug and alcohol programs using the enthusiastic approach. It is used with permission from AA World Services. Those familiar with 12 step programs will notice that the wording of these steps has been slightly modified to match the needs of teenagers and young adults, rather than the adult alcoholics they were originally written for:

  1. We admitted that mind-changing chemicals have caused at least part of our lives to become unmanageable.
  2. We found it necessary to “Stick with Winners” in order to grow.
  3. We realized that a Higher Power, expressed through our love for each other, can help restore us to sanity.
  4. We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, as we understand Him.
  5. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  6. We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  7. We became willing to allow our Higher Power, through the love of the group to help change our way of thinking and humbly ask Him to help us change.
  8. We made a list of all persons we have harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. We made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them, others, or ourselves.
  10. We have continued to look at ourselves and when wrong, promptly admitted it.
  11. We have sought through prayer and meditation, to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the courage to carry that out.
  12. We, having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, tried to carry our love and understanding to others, and to practice these principles in our daily lives.
